about

“Hold It Together” finds the Florists sharpening their focus on serious fun. The Minneapolis band packed tricky grooves within spiraling spazz’n’roll to produce the most fully-realized Florists album yet.

Its 11 songs are upbeat, catchy, and largely about all-consuming social dread. No downers though, because the Florists always remember to laugh that shit off. They prefer to transfer those feelings to rhythms, expertly conjuring panicked anthems for a hypermediated present. “Hold It Together” documents the Florists’ recreation of their powerful live energy in the studio at Future Condo with engineer/producer Jordan Bléau. Each track seamlessly transports listeners to the vibe of their storied performances, wherein audience members may find themselves running around the venue or in the midst of a spontaneous ensemble tap routine.

Jo Kellen, Jared Hemming, and Luke Michaels rotate instruments across the record. Each of their creative voices coalesce to capture one wiggling force of nature. The arrangements spin webs of agile dance/punk, tying intricate guitar with athletic drumming. Synthesizers and samples polish the songs with a psychedelic, new wave sheen. As usual, lyrics and humor play a crucial role. Celebrations of shoplifting crash into healthcare anxieties and a simple question emerges from the wreckage: “did you know that she’s anti-Ebonics?” “Hold It Together” yanks its subject matter onto the dance floor with a tendency toward loud, hooky catharsis. When put in perspective with an ever-expanding catalog, this album shines as the Florists’ most mature release. The band continues to craft strange kinship with their audience while retaining mystery. Never totally straight-faced yet somehow dead-serious, the Florists treat every song like it’s life or death.
